Matangi Quartet is a Dutch classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and innovative approach to music since their formation in 1999. The quartet consists of four talented musicians: Maria-Paula Majoor (violin), Daniel Torrico Menacho (violin), Karsten Kleijer (viola), and Arno van der Vuurst (cello). The quartet takes its name from the Hindu goddess Matangi, who is known for her fierce and independent spirit. This name reflects the quartet's commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new musical territory. Matangi Quartet's journey began in the Netherlands, where the four musicians met while studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began performing together as a quartet. Their early performances were well-received, and the quartet soon gained a reputation for their dynamic and engaging performances. They began to attract attention from music critics and industry professionals, and their career began to take off. One of the quartet's early highlights was their performance at the 2003 Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale, where they were awarded the prestigious Kersjes van de Groenekan Prize. This award is given annually to a young Dutch chamber music ensemble that shows exceptional promise, and it helped to launch Matangi Quartet's career to new heights. Since then, the quartet has gone on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers, and have premiered numerous new works. One of the quartet's most notable collaborations was with the Dutch composer Michel van der Aa, with whom they worked on the multimedia opera "After Life". The opera, which premiered in 2006, combines live performance with film and video projections, and has been hailed as a groundbreaking work of contemporary music. Matangi Quartet has also worked with other prominent composers, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams. They have recorded several albums, including "Matangi Quartet plays Philip Glass" and "Matangi Quartet plays Steve Reich". In addition to their performances and recordings, Matangi Quartet is also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians and students, and have conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. Matangi Quartet's unique sound and innovative approach to music have earned them numerous accolades and awards over the years. In addition to the Kersjes van de Groenekan Prize, they have been awarded the Dutch Classical Music Award and the Edison Classical Music Award. Despite their success, Matangi Quartet remains committed to pushing boundaries and exploring new musical territory. They continue to collaborate with composers and musicians from a wide range of genres, and are always looking for new ways to engage with audiences and expand the boundaries of classical music.
