The Alsfelder Vokalensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 40 years. Founded in 1976 by Wolfgang Helbich, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and sought-after vocal groups in Germany and beyond. The ensemble's name is derived from the town of Alsfeld, where it was founded. The group started as a small choir of around 20 members, but it quickly grew in size and reputation. Today, the Alsfelder Vokalensemble consists of around 50 singers, all of whom are highly skilled and dedicated musicians. The ensemble's repertoire is diverse, ranging from early music to contemporary works. They are particularly known for their performances of Baroque music, and have collaborated with some of the world's leading Baroque specialists, including Ton Koopman and Reinhard Goebel. One of the ensemble's main strengths is its commitment to authenticity and historical accuracy. They use period instruments and perform works in their original languages, striving to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in its time. Over the years, the Alsfelder Vokalensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in Europe and beyond. They have appeared at the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among many others. The ensemble has also won numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. They have been awarded the Echo Klassik award three times, and have received critical acclaim for their recordings of works by Bach, Handel, and Schütz, among others. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 2013 concert at the Bachfest Leipzig, where they performed Bach's Mass in B Minor. The performance was hailed as a triumph, with critics praising the ensemble's precision, clarity, and emotional depth. Another highlight of the ensemble's career was their collaboration with the renowned conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In 2009, they performed Bach's St. Matthew Passion under Harnoncourt's direction, in what was to be one of his final performances before his death in 2016. The performance was widely regarded as a masterpiece, and was recorded for posterity. The Alsfelder Vokalensemble has also been involved in numerous educational and outreach programs, working with young musicians and promoting the appreciation of classical music.
