Michelle Makarski is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violinist and chamber musician. Born in 1959 in New York City, Makarski grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Makarski began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with some of the most respected violin teachers in the world, including Ivan Galamian, Dorothy DeLay, and Felix Galimir. She also attended the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Throughout her career, Makarski has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of Makarski's career was her performance of the complete Bach sonatas and partitas for solo violin at the Marlboro Music Festival in 1995. This performance was widely acclaimed and helped establish Makarski as one of the leading interpreters of Bach's music. Makarski has also been recognized for her work as a chamber musician. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In 2000, she formed the Makarski/Neubauer Duo with violist Paul Neubauer, and the duo has since performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to her work as a performer, Makarski is also a respected teacher. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Bard College Conservatory of Music. She has also given masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Conservatoire de Paris. Makarski has received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1989, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. She has also been awarded the Naumburg Foundation Award and the Pro Musicis International Award. In addition to her work as a classical musician, Makarski is also interested in contemporary music. She has premiered many new works by composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich. She has also recorded several albums of contemporary music, including a recording of John Adams' Violin Concerto with the London Sinfonietta.
