Trio Fontenay is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1980 in Germany. The ensemble consists of three members: pianist Wolf Harden, violinist Michael Mücke, and cellist Niklas Schmidt. The trio has gained international recognition for their performances of classical music, particularly the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. The founding members of Trio Fontenay were Wolf Harden, Michael Mücke, and Jens-Peter Maintz. The trio was named after the Fontenay Abbey in Burgundy, France, where they had their first rehearsal. The ensemble quickly gained attention for their dynamic and expressive performances, and they were soon invited to perform at major music festivals throughout Europe. In 1983, Trio Fontenay won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, which helped to launch their career on the international stage. Despite their success, Trio Fontenay has experienced some changes in membership over the years. In 2005, cellist Jens-Peter Maintz left the ensemble and was replaced by Niklas Schmidt. The trio continued to perform and record with their new member, and their performances were praised for their renewed energy and vitality. Today, Trio Fontenay continues to perform and record, and they remain one of the world's most respected classical music ensembles.
