Robert Hayward was born on May 22, 1956, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional cellist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Hayward showed a natural talent for music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Hayward attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied under renowned cellist William Pleeth. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was awarded several prestigious scholarships, including the Leverhulme Scholarship and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. After completing his studies, Hayward began his professional career as a cellist, performing with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also performed as a soloist, playing with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. One of Hayward's most notable performances was his rendition of Elgar's Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1985. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Hayward's reputation as one of the most talented cellists of his generation. In addition to his work as a performer, Hayward was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in the music industry. Throughout his career, Hayward received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1987, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also a recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award and the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording. Hayward continued to perform and teach until his retirement in 2016. He passed away on January 1, 2019, at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented and influential cellists of his generation.
