Born on October 26, 1986, in Kiev, Ukraine, Kholodenko showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was enrolled in the Kiev Special Music School for Gifted Children, where he received rigorous training in piano performance and music theory. Kholodenko's talent was quickly recognized, and he began to win awards and competitions at a young age. In 2005, he won first prize at the International Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens, Greece, and in 2006, he won first prize at the Sendai International Music Competition in Japan. These early successes paved the way for Kholodenko's career as a professional pianist. In 2013, Kholodenko gained international attention when he won the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. His performances at the competition were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, and he was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Since then, Kholodenko has performed with major orchestras and at renowned concert halls around the world.
