Artist Info
12 Ensemble is a London-based classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012. The group is known for its innovative and dynamic performances, which blend classical and contemporary music in exciting and unexpected ways. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented young musicians in the UK, and has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting and innovative groups in the classical music world. The founding of 12 Ensemble was the brainchild of conductor and violinist Max Baillie. Baillie had previously worked with a number of different ensembles and orchestras, but he was frustrated by the limitations of traditional classical music performance. He wanted to create a group that would be more flexible and adaptable, and that would be able to explore a wider range of musical styles and genres. To achieve this goal, Baillie assembled a group of like-minded musicians who shared his vision. The ensemble's core members include violinists Eloisa-Fleur Thom, Marije Johnston, and Tom Norris; violists Matthew Jones and Robert Ames; cellists Max Ruisi and Tim Lowe; double bassist Dan Benn; and pianist James Baillieu. The group also collaborates with a number of other musicians and composers, depending on the needs of each performance. One of the key features of 12 Ensemble's performances is their use of a flexible and adaptable ensemble structure. Rather than performing with a fixed number of musicians, the group is able to adjust its size and instrumentation to suit the needs of each piece of music. This allows the ensemble to explore a wider range of musical styles and genres, and to create performances that are truly unique and innovative. Since its founding, 12 Ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the UK and around the world. The group has collaborated with a number of leading composers and musicians, including Nico Muhly, Anna Meredith, and Bryce Dessner of The National. They have also performed at the BBC Proms, the Southbank Centre, and the Barbican Centre, among other venues. One of the highlights of 12 Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2018 Proms. The group performed a program of contemporary music, including works by Anna Meredith, Caroline Shaw, and Philip Glass. The performance was widely praised for its energy, creativity, and technical skill, and cemented 12 Ensemble's reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative classical music ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, 12 Ensemble has also received a number of awards and accolades for their work. In 2016, the group was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artists Award, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and ensembles. The group has also been featured on a number of recordings, including their debut album, Resurrection, which was released in 2019. Overall, 12 Ensemble is a truly unique and innovative classical music ensemble that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in classical music performance. With their flexible ensemble structure, dynamic performances, and collaborations with leading composers and musicians, the group is sure to continue to make waves in the classical music world for years to come.More....
