Role:ComposerBirth:1990Oliver Leith is a British composer who was born in 1985 in Southampton, England. He grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a composer. Leith began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and drums. He attended the University of York, where he studied music composition and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007. After completing his undergraduate studies, Leith went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Royal College of Music in London. During his time there, he studied with renowned composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage and Julian Anderson. He also had the opportunity to work with the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Leith's early works were heavily influenced by the music of minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His compositions often featured repetitive patterns and simple harmonies, but with a unique twist that set them apart from other minimalist works. One of his early works, "Three Pieces for Piano," was premiered at the Royal College of Music in 2008 and received critical acclaim. In 2010, Leith was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, which allowed him to work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This collaboration resulted in the premiere of his orchestral work, "A Day at the Spa," which was described as "a witty and engaging piece" by The Guardian. Leith's music continued to evolve over the years, with his later works incorporating more complex harmonies and textures. In 2015, he was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta to write a piece for their 2016 season. The resulting work, "Honey Siren," was premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in London and received widespread critical acclaim. Leith's music has been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras around the world, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with a variety of artists, including choreographers, visual artists, and filmmakers. In addition to his work as a composer, Leith is also a lecturer in music composition at the Royal Holloway, University of London. He has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities and conservatories around the world, including the Royal College of Music, the University of York, and the University of California, Berkeley. Leith's music has been described as "playful, inventive, and full of surprises" by The Guardian, and his unique approach to composition has earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting young composers working today. With a growing body of work that spans orchestral, chamber, and electronic music, Oliver Leith is a composer to watch in the coming years.More....
