Born on January 9, 1973, in Taipei, Taiwan, Huang began playing the viola at the age of six. Her parents were both music teachers, and they recognized her talent early on. Huang's family moved to Houston, Texas, when she was nine years old, and she continued her musical studies there. Huang attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, where she studied with Joan DerHovsepian. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with Michael Tree. Huang then pursued her Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Samuel Rhodes. Huang's career as a professional musician began in 1993, when she won the top prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in England. This prestigious award helped to launch her career, and she quickly became recognized as one of the most talented violists of her generation. Huang has since performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work as a soloist, Huang is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Emerson Quartet. Huang is also a founding member of the Trio Cavatina, which has been praised for its "exquisite sensitivity" and "perfect ensemble playing." Huang has received many awards and honors throughout her career. In addition to her win at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, she has also won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, the Washington International Competition for Strings, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Huang was also a recipient of the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2007. Huang is also an active educator, and she has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including The Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. She is currently a professor of viola at the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York. Huang's discography includes many critically acclaimed recordings. Her debut album, "Viola Viola," was released in 2001 and features works by Bach, Hindemith, and Shostakovich. She has also recorded works by Mozart, Brahms, and Schumann, among others. Huang's most recent recording, "Strings Attached," features works for viola and string quartet by composers such as Mozart, Schubert, and Dvořák. Huang is known for her warm, rich tone and her expressive playing. She is praised for her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she performs, and for her impeccable technique. Huang is also known for her commitment to new music, and she has premiered many works by contemporary composers. In addition to her musical career, Huang is also a dedicated philanthropist. She is the founder of the Yun-Huang Foundation, which provides support for young musicians in Taiwan.
