He was born on October 13, 1958, in England, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Darlington's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied piano and composition. He later continued his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he focused on conducting.
