He was born on August 22, 1973, in Oslo, Norway, to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at a young age. Mortensen started playing the piano when he was only four years old, and by the time he was six, he had already started performing in public. He received his formal training at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianists such as Einar Steen-Nøkleberg and Jens Harald Bratlie. Mortensen's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first competition at the age of nine, and by the time he was in his teens, he had already won several national and international competitions. In 1991, Mortensen won the prestigious Norwegian Soloist Prize, which is awarded to the most promising young musicians in Norway.
