Role:EnsembleGenre:BalletChoralOperaSymphonyThe London Symphony Orchestra Chorus is one of the most renowned and respected choral ensembles in the world. Founded in 1966, the chorus has been an integral part of the London Symphony Orchestra's performances and recordings for over five decades. The idea for the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus was first proposed by the orchestra's then-principal conductor, Sir Colin Davis. Davis believed that having a dedicated chorus would enhance the orchestra's performances of choral works, and he set about recruiting singers from across London to form the ensemble. The first rehearsal of the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus took place in September 1966, with Davis conducting. The chorus quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, and its first major performance came just a few months later, in December 1966, when it joined the London Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Handel's Messiah at the Royal Festival Hall. Over the years, the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus has performed with some of the world's greatest conductors and soloists, and has tackled a wide range of repertoire, from Bach's St Matthew Passion to Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. The chorus has also been involved in numerous recordings, including the Grammy-winning recording of Berlioz's Les Troyens conducted by Sir Colin Davis. One of the highlights of the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus's history came in 1995, when it performed at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham Stadium. The chorus sang the national anthems of the participating countries, as well as a specially commissioned piece by composer John Tavener. In addition to its performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the chorus has also collaborated with other orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Royal Opera House. The chorus has also toured extensively, performing in venues across Europe, Asia, and North America. Over the years, the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2005, the chorus was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for its performance of Britten's War Requiem at St Paul's Cathedral. The chorus has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and has won two, for its recordings of Berlioz's Les Troyens and Verdi's Requiem. Today, the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus continues to be an important part of the London Symphony Orchestra's performances and recordings. The chorus is made up of around 160 amateur singers, who are selected through auditions. The chorus rehearses regularly throughout the year, and performs in around 20 concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra each season. The London Symphony Orchestra Chorus's commitment to excellence and its dedication to the performance of choral music have made it one of the most respected and admired choral ensembles in the world. Its performances are characterized by a rich, full-bodied sound, impeccable intonation, and a deep emotional connection to the music. As the chorus enters its sixth decade, it continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike with its passion and artistry.More....
