The Kölner Rundfunkchor, also known as the Cologne Radio Choir, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Cologne, Germany. The choir was founded in 1947 by the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), a public broadcasting institution in Germany. Since its inception, the Kölner Rundfunkchor has become one of the most respected and sought-after choirs in the world, known for its exceptional musicianship and versatility. The Kölner Rundfunkchor was established in the aftermath of World War II, when Germany was rebuilding its cultural institutions. The WDR recognized the need for a professional choir to perform on its radio programs, and thus the Kölner Rundfunkchor was born. The choir's first conductor was Hermann Abendroth, a prominent German conductor who had previously led the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Under Abendroth's leadership, the Kölner Rundfunkchor quickly established itself as a top-tier ensemble, known for its precision and clarity of sound. Over the years, the Kölner Rundfunkchor has worked with many of the world's leading conductors and orchestras. The choir has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. The choir has also collaborated with many of the most celebrated soloists of our time, including Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Cecilia Bartoli. One of the highlights of the Kölner Rundfunkchor's career was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The choir performed the Olympic Hymn, composed by Greek composer Spyridon Samaras, as well as the German national anthem. The performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world, and helped to cement the choir's reputation as one of the finest ensembles in Europe. In addition to its work with orchestras and soloists, the Kölner Rundfunkchor has also made a name for itself as a champion of contemporary music. The choir has premiered works by many of the leading composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, and Arvo Pärt. The choir's commitment to new music has helped to keep it at the forefront of the classical music world, and has earned it numerous awards and accolades. One of the most prestigious awards the Kölner Rundfunkchor has received is the Echo Klassik Award, which is presented annually to the best classical music recordings and performances. The choir has won the award several times, most recently in 2019 for its recording of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. The choir has also been honored with the German Record Critics' Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the International Classical Music Award, among others. Today, the Kölner Rundfunkchor continues to be one of the most respected and admired choirs in the world. The choir is currently led by conductor and artistic director Eberhard Metternich, who has been with the ensemble since 1994. Under Metternich's leadership, the Kölner Rundfunkchor has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, performing a wide range of repertoire and collaborating with some of the most exciting artists of our time. In conclusion, the Kölner Rundfunkchor is a true gem of the classical music world. From its humble beginnings in post-war Germany to its current status as one of the most respected choirs in the world, the Kölner Rundfunkchor has always been dedicated to excellence and innovation.
