Milarsky began his musical education at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied percussion. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance. He also performed with many contemporary music ensembles, including the New York New Music Ensemble and the Group for Contemporary Music. In addition to his work as a percussionist, Milarsky also began conducting in the early 1990s. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled conductor, and was soon in demand as a guest conductor with orchestras and ensembles around the world. One of Milarsky's most notable performances as a conductor was his 2003 performance of John Adams' "Harmonielehre" with the New York Philharmonic. The performance was widely praised by critics, and helped to establish Milarsky as one of the leading conductors of contemporary music. Milarsky has also been recognized for his work as a conductor and percussionist. In 2005, he was awarded the Ditson Conductor's Award, which is given annually to a conductor who has demonstrated a commitment to the performance of American music. He has also been awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize and the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Milarsky is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Yale School of Music, and has served as a guest lecturer at many other institutions around the world. Milarsky's dedication to contemporary music has helped to bring new works to audiences around the world. He has premiered works by many of the leading composers of our time, including John Adams, Steve Reich, and Elliott Carter. Today, Milarsky continues to perform and conduct around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary classical music. His dedication to the performance of new works has helped to shape the direction of classical music in the 21st century, and his contributions to the field will be felt for many years to come.
