Hemsley received his formal education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned vocal coach Roy Henderson. He made his professional debut in 1951 at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where he played the role of the Count in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in the world of classical music.
