He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Bengt showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the violin and the viola. Bengt Rundgren's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the guidance of renowned violinist and conductor Tor Mann. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay. Bengt Rundgren's career as a classical music artist began in the 1950s when he joined the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as a violist. He later became the principal violist of the orchestra and held the position for over a decade. During this time, he also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with some of the most prominent musicians of his time. One of Bengt Rundgren's most significant performances was his debut as a soloist with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1959. He performed the Viola Concerto by William Walton, which was well-received by both the audience and the critics. This performance marked the beginning of Bengt's career as a soloist, and he went on to perform with many other orchestras around the world.
