He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Blomdahl began his musical studies at a young age and showed a great talent for composition. He studied at the Stockholm Conservatory and later at the Royal College of Music in London. Blomdahl's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of Stravinsky and Hindemith. However, he soon developed his own unique style, which was characterized by the use of electronic music and serialism. Blomdahl was one of the pioneers of electronic music in Sweden and was one of the first composers to use electronic music in a concert setting. Blomdahl's most famous work is his opera "Aniara," which was based on a poem by Harry Martinson. The opera tells the story of a spaceship that is carrying refugees from a destroyed Earth to a new planet. The spaceship gets lost in space, and the passengers are forced to confront their mortality and the meaning of life. "Aniara" premiered in 1959 and was a critical and commercial success. It has since become one of the most performed operas in Sweden. Blomdahl's other notable works include "Astralis," a ballet that was commissioned by the Royal Swedish Ballet, and "Marinetti," an opera that was based on the life of the Italian futurist poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Blomdahl also composed several orchestral works, including "Sisyfos," "Forma Ferritonans," and "Wetterleuchten." Blomdahl was also a teacher and a mentor to many young composers. He taught at the Stockholm Conservatory and was a professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Many of his students went on to become successful composers in their own right. Blomdahl's career was cut short when he died of a heart attack on June 14, 1968, at the age of 51. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
