Founded in 1956 by conductor and composer Victor Popov, the choir quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and unique sound. Popov, who was a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, had a vision of creating a choir that would showcase the rich tradition of Russian choral music. He handpicked the members of the choir, selecting only the most talented singers from the conservatory and other music schools in Moscow. Under Popov's leadership, the Moscow Chamber Choir quickly established itself as one of the premier choral ensembles in the world. They performed extensively throughout the Soviet Union, and their reputation soon spread beyond the borders of Russia. In 1964, the choir made their international debut at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Their performance was a resounding success, and they were invited to perform at other major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe. Over the years, the Moscow Chamber Choir has performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Claudio Abbado, Valery Gergiev, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have also collaborated with many of the leading composers of our time, including Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Sofia Gubaidulina. One of the highlights of the choir's career came in 1991, when they performed at the funeral of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's wife, Raisa. Their performance of Rachmaninoff's "Bogoroditse Devo" was widely praised for its beauty and emotional depth. The Moscow Chamber Choir has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1977, they were awarded the title of "People's Artist of the USSR," the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in the Soviet Union. They have also been awarded the Order of Friendship, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland. Despite the many accolades and achievements of the Moscow Chamber Choir, their focus has always remained on the music. They continue to perform with passion and dedication, bringing the beauty of Russian choral music to audiences around the world.More....
