Gustavo Gimeno is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a conductor and percussionist. Born on November 26, 1976, in Valencia, Spain, Gimeno grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a percussionist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Gimeno showed a keen interest in music and began playing the drums at the age of eight. Gimeno's musical education began at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, where he studied percussion. He later went on to study at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he focused on orchestral conducting. During his time in Amsterdam, Gimeno was mentored by renowned conductor Mariss Jansons, who had a significant influence on his career. Gimeno's career as a percussionist began in 1997 when he joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the orchestra's principal percussionist in 2002. During his time with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gimeno performed under the baton of some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Bernard Haitink, Claudio Abbado, and Riccardo Chailly. In 2012, Gimeno decided to shift his focus to conducting and began studying with Jansons once again. He made his conducting debut in 2013 with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Spain. The performance was a success, and Gimeno was soon invited to conduct other orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Gimeno's conducting career took off in 2014 when he was appointed the principal conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. During his time with the orchestra, Gimeno led them on several successful tours and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Maurice Ravel's orchestral works. In 2015, Gimeno made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra, which led to his appointment as the orchestra's principal guest conductor in 2017. He has since conducted the orchestra on several tours and recordings, including a Grammy-nominated recording of Franz Welser-Möst's arrangement of Richard Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben." Gimeno has also made a name for himself as a guest conductor with other orchestras around the world. He has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition to his work as a conductor, Gimeno is also an accomplished percussionist. He has performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Gimeno's talent and hard work have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious "Echo Klassik" award for his recording of Ravel's orchestral works with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. He has also been awarded the "Diapason d'Or" award and the "Choc de Classica" award for his recordings. Gimeno's passion for music and dedication to his craft have made him one of the most sought-after conductors in the world. His ability to connect with musicians and audiences alike has earned him a reputation as a dynamic and inspiring conductor. As he continues to lead orchestras around the world, Gustavo Gimeno's star is sure to continue to rise.
