Born in 1948 in New York City, Solum grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Solum's early musical education was at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Julius Baker, one of the most prominent flutists of the 20th century. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Solum went on to study at the Paris Conservatory with Jean-Pierre Rampal, another legendary flutist. In 1970, Solum joined the New York Philharmonic as its principal flutist, a position he held for 12 years.
