The National Orchestral Association (NOA) is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 1942, the NOA has a rich history of providing young musicians with the opportunity to gain professional experience and training in orchestral performance. The NOA was founded by conductor Leon Barzin, who had previously served as the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Barzin was passionate about providing young musicians with the opportunity to gain practical experience in orchestral performance, and he saw the NOA as a way to achieve this goal. The NOA's first concert was held on November 22, 1942, at Carnegie Hall. The program featured works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, and was met with critical acclaim. The NOA quickly established itself as a leading ensemble in the classical music world, and began to attract some of the most talented young musicians from around the country. Over the years, the NOA has had many notable members, including Leonard Bernstein, who served as the ensemble's assistant conductor in the early 1940s. Other notable members have included violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Emanuel Ax. One of the highlights of the NOA's history was its performance at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. The ensemble performed a program of American music, including works by Aaron Copland and George Gershwin, to an audience of thousands. The performance was widely praised for its energy and enthusiasm, and helped to cement the NOA's reputation as one of the leading classical music ensembles in the country. In addition to its performances, the NOA has also been recognized for its contributions to the classical music world. In 1951, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Ditson Conductor's Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to American music. The NOA was the first ensemble to receive this award, and it remains one of the most prestigious honors in the classical music world. Today, the NOA continues to provide young musicians with the opportunity to gain practical experience in orchestral performance. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented young musicians from around the country, and is led by conductor David Alan Miller. In recent years, the NOA has continued to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the country, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the leading classical musicians of our time, including violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Lang Lang. Despite its many accomplishments, the NOA remains committed to its original mission of providing young musicians with the opportunity to gain practical experience in orchestral performance. Through its performances and educational programs, the NOA continues to inspire the next generation of classical musicians and music lovers.
