Rick Stotijn is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a double bassist. He was born on May 24, 1974, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to a family of musicians. His father, Peter Stotijn, was a cellist, and his mother, Xenia Meijer, was a harpist. Rick grew up in a musical environment and started playing the double bass at the age of nine. Rick's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a sought-after musician. He studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and later at the Hochschule fĂĽr Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany. He also received guidance from renowned double bassists such as Bozo Paradzik and Rinat Ibragimov. Rick's career took off in the early 2000s when he won several prestigious awards, including the Dutch Music Prize in 2005. He has since performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Mariss Jansons, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Rick's most notable performances was his solo debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2007. He performed Serge Koussevitzky's Double Bass Concerto, which was met with critical acclaim. The performance was later released on CD and received widespread praise. Rick is also a passionate chamber musician and has performed with some of the world's leading ensembles, including the Nash Ensemble and the Jerusalem Quartet. He is a member of the Storioni Trio, which he co-founded in 1995. The trio has performed extensively throughout Europe and has released several recordings. In addition to his performing career, Rick is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Hochschule fĂĽr Musik und Theater in Hannover. He is currently a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts. Rick's playing is characterized by his warm tone and impeccable technique. He is known for his ability to bring out the expressive qualities of the double bass, which is often relegated to a supporting role in orchestral music. He is also a champion of contemporary music and has premiered several works by leading composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina and Mark-Anthony Turnage. In addition to the Dutch Music Prize, he has been awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and the Edison Classical Music Award. He was also named a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2017.
