Born on 17th May 1956 in London, England, Martin showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of eight. He was a student at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of William Pleeth, one of the most respected cello teachers of his time. He won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 1974.
