A Far Cry is a Boston-based chamber orchestra that has been making waves in the classical music world since its inception in 2007. The group was founded by a collective of young musicians who were looking for a new way to approach classical music performance. They wanted to create a more collaborative and democratic environment, where each member had a say in the artistic direction of the group. This approach has led to a unique and dynamic sound that has earned A Far Cry critical acclaim and a devoted following. The group's founding members were all graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music, and they came together with a shared vision of creating a new kind of chamber orchestra. They wanted to break away from the traditional model of a conductor-led ensemble, and instead create a group that was more self-directed and collaborative. They also wanted to explore a wider range of repertoire, including works from contemporary composers and lesser-known pieces from the classical canon. A Far Cry's first performance was in 2007, at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The group's debut concert was a huge success, and they quickly gained a reputation for their innovative approach to classical music performance. They began to perform regularly in Boston and throughout New England, and soon expanded their reach to other parts of the country and the world. One of the highlights of A Far Cry's early career was their performance at the 2009 TEDx Boston conference. The group was invited to perform a set of pieces that showcased their unique approach to classical music. The performance was a huge success, and it helped to raise the group's profile and attract new fans. In 2011, A Far Cry released their first album, entitled "Debut". The album featured works by Vivaldi, Bartok, and Golijov, among others. It was well-received by critics and helped to establish the group as a major force in the classical music world. Over the years, A Far Cry has collaborated with a wide range of artists and composers. They have worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, and Vijay Iyer, among others. They have also commissioned new works from a number of contemporary composers, including Caroline Shaw, Andrew Norman, and Ted Hearne. One of the group's most notable collaborations was with the Silk Road Ensemble, a group founded by Yo-Yo Ma that explores the intersections of different musical traditions. A Far Cry and the Silk Road Ensemble performed together at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 2015, in a concert that showcased the unique blend of styles and cultures that both groups bring to their music. A Far Cry has also been recognized for their innovative approach to classical music performance. In 2014, they were awarded the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America. The award recognized the group's commitment to collaboration and their ability to create a unique and dynamic sound. In addition to their performances and recordings, A Far Cry is also committed to education and outreach. They have worked with a number of schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. They have also created a program called "Crier Kids", which provides music education and mentorship to young musicians. A Far Cry's unique approach to classical music performance has earned them a devoted following and critical acclaim.
