He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Sondeckis began playing the violin at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. In 1946, Sondeckis enrolled at the Lithuanian State Conservatory, where he studied violin under the tutelage of Juozas Karosas. He graduated in 1951 and began his career as a violinist, performing with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and was soon appointed as the orchestra's concertmaster. In 1956, Sondeckis was appointed as the conductor of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for over 50 years. Under his leadership, the orchestra became one of the most renowned chamber orchestras in the world, performing in major concert halls across Europe, Asia, and the United States. Sondeckis was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians. He was also a champion of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering works by many of the leading composers of his time. Throughout his career, Sondeckis received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1975, he was awarded the Lithuanian State Prize for his work with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra. He was also awarded the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, one of the highest honors in Lithuania. Sondeckis was a prolific recording artist, and his recordings with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra are considered some of the finest interpretations of classical music. He recorded over 50 albums, including works by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich. One of the highlights of Sondeckis's career was his performance at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. He conducted the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Mozart's Symphony No. 40, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Sondeckis continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s, and he remained an active advocate for classical music until his death on February 3, 2016, at the age of 87. His legacy as a musician and conductor continues to inspire generations of classical musicians around the world.More....
