Donald Bell was born on May 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Bell showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. Bell's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Under her guidance, Bell developed a deep love and appreciation for classical music. As a child, Bell participated in numerous piano competitions and won several awards. At the age of ten, he won first prize in the Young Pianist Competition in New York City. This was a significant achievement for Bell, and it marked the beginning of his career as a professional musician. Bell continued to study with Pires throughout his teenage years, and he also attended the Juilliard School in New York City. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Juilliard in 2007 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. One of Bell's most significant achievements as a musician came in 2010 when he won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
