Theo Altmeyer was a renowned German baritone singer who was born on August 6, 1939, in the city of Mannheim, Germany. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Altmeyer showed a keen interest in music and began singing in his school choir. He received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned baritone singer, Fritz Wunderlich. Altmeyer's career as a professional singer began in 1963 when he made his debut at the National Theatre in Mannheim, where he performed the role of Papageno in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance was well-received by the audience and marked the beginning of Altmeyer's successful career as a baritone singer. Over the years, Altmeyer performed in numerous operas and concerts across Europe and the United States. He was particularly known for his performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. Some of his most notable performances include his portrayal of the title role in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival in 1973, his performance as Wolfram in Wagner's "Tannhäuser" at the Bayreuth Festival in 1974, and his portrayal of the role of Amfortas in Wagner's "Parsifal" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1985. Altmeyer was also a prolific recording artist and recorded numerous albums throughout his career. Some of his most notable recordings include his rendition of Schubert's "Winterreise," which he recorded with pianist Christoph Eschenbach in 1976, and his recording of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis," which he recorded with conductor Herbert von Karajan in 1979. Throughout his career, Altmeyer received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1975, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He was also awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1985 and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1990. Despite his success as a singer, Altmeyer was known for his modesty and humility. He was deeply committed to his craft and was known for his dedication to his art. He was also known for his generosity and often gave his time and resources to support young musicians and aspiring singers. Altmeyer's career as a singer came to an end in the early 1990s when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Despite his illness, he continued to be involved in music and served as a mentor to young musicians. He passed away on December 24, 2019, at the age of 80.
