Steven Doane is a renowned cellist and professor of music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1955 and began playing the cello at the age of eight. Doane studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and later at the Eastman School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he earned his Master of Music degree. Doane's career as a cellist began in the 1970s, when he performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. He also played with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music, where he has been teaching ever since. Doane has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in chamber music ensembles with renowned musicians such as pianist Barry Snyder and violinist Pamela Frank. One of Doane's most notable performances was his 1993 recording of the complete Bach cello suites, which received critical acclaim and was named one of the best recordings of the year by The New York Times. He has also recorded works by other composers, including Schubert, Brahms, and Beethoven. Doane has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1986, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He has also received the Eastman School of Music's Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University of Rochester's Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Doane is also a respected author and scholar. He has written articles for music journals and has published a book, The Art of Practicing the Cello, which is widely used by cello students and teachers.
