Lerner's parents were both musicians, and his father was a composer and conductor. Lerner's early musical education was heavily influenced by his parents, and he began studying with renowned pianist Rosina Lhévinne at the Juilliard School when he was just 12 years old. Lerner's talent as a pianist quickly became apparent, and he won numerous competitions and awards throughout his teenage years. He made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 17, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance was widely praised, and Lerner was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world.
