The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Dublin, Ireland. Founded in 1948, the orchestra has grown to become one of the most respected and accomplished orchestras in Europe, with a rich history of performances and recordings that have earned it international acclaim. The NSO was established as the Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra, with the aim of providing high-quality classical music programming for Irish radio listeners. The orchestra's first conductor was the Hungarian-born conductor Tibor Paul, who led the ensemble for its first decade. Under Paul's leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing a wide range of classical repertoire and collaborating with some of the world's leading soloists and conductors. In the 1960s and 1970s, the NSO continued to expand its repertoire and reach, performing regularly in Dublin and throughout Ireland, as well as touring internationally. The orchestra's second conductor, Colman Pearce, led the ensemble from 1963 to 1973, and oversaw a period of significant growth and development. During this time, the NSO recorded extensively for radio and television, and collaborated with a number of prominent Irish composers, including Seán Ó Riada and Gerard Victory. In the 1980s and 1990s, the NSO continued to build on its reputation as one of Europe's leading orchestras, under the leadership of conductors such as Bryden Thomson and George Hurst. During this time, the orchestra performed a wide range of classical repertoire, from the Baroque and Classical periods to contemporary works by living composers. The NSO also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including pianist John O'Conor and violinist Maxim Vengerov. In 2001, the NSO was renamed the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, reflecting its status as Ireland's national orchestra. The orchestra's current chief conductor is Nathalie Stutzmann, who was appointed in 2018. Stutzmann is a renowned French conductor and contralto, and has led the NSO in a number of critically acclaimed performances and recordings. In recent years, the NSO has continued to build on its reputation as one of Europe's leading orchestras, with a busy schedule of performances and recordings. The orchestra performs regularly at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, as well as at other venues throughout Ireland and internationally. The NSO also collaborates with a wide range of artists and organizations, including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Irish Baroque Orchestra, and the Wexford Festival Opera. One of the NSO's most notable recent performances was its 2019 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," at the National Concert Hall. The performance, conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, was widely praised for its emotional intensity and technical precision, and was hailed as one of the NSO's finest performances in recent years. The NSO has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2018, the orchestra was awarded the Best Classical Music Initiative award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards, in recognition of its commitment to promoting classical music in Ireland. The NSO has also been recognized for its recordings, including a Grammy nomination for its recording of John Adams' "Harmonielehre" in 1990. Overall, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has a rich and storied history, and continues to be one of Europe's leading orchestras.
