He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Sørensen showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Sørensen's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He began performing in public at the age of eight and was soon recognized as one of Denmark's most promising young musicians. He continued to study music throughout his childhood and adolescence, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won several prestigious awards for his performances. In 1963, Sørensen enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer Herman D. Koppel. During his time at the academy, Sørensen continued to hone his skills as a pianist and composer, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented musicians of his generation. After graduating from the academy in 1967, Sørensen began his professional career as a pianist and composer. He quickly gained a following in Denmark and began performing regularly at some of the country's most prestigious concert halls. In 1970, he made his international debut at the Edinburgh Festival, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32. Over the next few years, Sørensen continued to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also began to receive numerous awards and accolades for his performances, including the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1974 and the Sonning Prize in 1980. Throughout his career, Sørensen was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, and his recordings of these composers' works remain some of the most highly regarded in the classical music canon. In addition to his work as a pianist, Sørensen was also a prolific composer. He wrote numerous works for piano, as well as chamber music, orchestral works, and vocal music. His compositions were known for their lyrical beauty and their emotional depth, and they were often inspired by the natural beauty of his native Denmark. Despite his success as a musician, Sørensen remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and compose until his death in 1998, at the age of 53. Today, he is remembered as one of Denmark's greatest classical music artists, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
