The quartet was founded in 1975 by four Hungarian musicians, Gabor Takács-Nagy (violin), Károly Schranz (violin), Gabor Ormai (viola), and András Fejér (cello), who were all students at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. The quartet's name is derived from the surname of its founder, Gabor Takács-Nagy, who left the group in 1992 to pursue a career as a conductor. The quartet has since undergone several personnel changes, with Edward Dusinberre (violin) joining in 1993, Roger Tapping (viola) in 1995, and Harumi Rhodes (violin) in 2018. The Takács Quartet has been praised for their exceptional musicianship, technical precision, and emotional depth. They have performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
