Sofia Orthodox Ensemble is a classical music group that specializes in performing Orthodox Christian liturgical music. The ensemble was founded in 1992 in Sofia, Bulgaria, by conductor and composer Georgi Robev. Robev, who was born in 1943 in Sofia, Bulgaria, began his musical career as a pianist. He studied at the National Academy of Music in Sofia and later at the Moscow Conservatory. After completing his studies, Robev worked as a conductor and composer, focusing on Orthodox Christian liturgical music. In 1992, Robev founded the Sofia Orthodox Ensemble with the goal of preserving and promoting the rich tradition of Orthodox Christian music. The ensemble consists of a choir of male and female voices, as well as instrumentalists who play traditional Orthodox Christian instruments such as the gaida (a type of bagpipe), the kaval (a type of flute), and the tambura (a type of stringed instrument). The Sofia Orthodox Ensemble quickly gained recognition for their exceptional performances of Orthodox Christian music. They have performed in numerous concerts and festivals throughout Bulgaria and Europe, including the prestigious Sofia Music Weeks festival. They have also performed in churches and monasteries throughout Bulgaria, bringing their music to a wider audience. One of the highlights of the Sofia Orthodox Ensemble's career was their performance at the 1998 World Music Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia. The ensemble received critical acclaim for their performance, which showcased the beauty and complexity of Orthodox Christian music. In addition to their performances, the Sofia Orthodox Ensemble has also released several albums of Orthodox Christian music. Their first album, "Orthodox Chants," was released in 1994 and features traditional chants from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Their second album, "Orthodox Chants II," was released in 1998 and features chants from the Russian Orthodox Church. The Sofia Orthodox Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the preservation and promotion of Orthodox Christian music. In 2002, they were awarded the "Golden Lyre" award by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for their outstanding contributions to Bulgarian music. They have also been recognized by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church for their work in preserving and promoting Orthodox Christian music. Despite their success, the Sofia Orthodox Ensemble remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting Orthodox Christian music. They continue to perform and record traditional chants and liturgical music, ensuring that this rich tradition is passed down to future generations.
