Lomakin showed an early interest in music and began playing the balalaika at a young age. At the age of 12, Lomakin was sent to Moscow to study music. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a student of Nikolai Rubinstein, the founder of the conservatory. Lomakin was a talented student and quickly became known for his compositions. He won several awards for his work, including the prestigious Glinka Prize. Lomakin's music was heavily influenced by Russian folk music. He was particularly interested in the music of the Kostroma region, where he grew up. He incorporated elements of this music into his compositions, creating a unique sound that was both traditional and modern. Lomakin's most famous work is his opera, "The Tsar's Bride." The opera tells the story of a young woman who is chosen to be the wife of the Tsar, but who is ultimately betrayed by her own family. The opera was first performed in 1899 and was an immediate success. It has since become one of the most popular operas in the Russian repertoire. In addition to his opera, Lomakin composed a number of other works, including symphonies, chamber music, and songs. His music was well-regarded by his contemporaries, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. Lomakin was also a teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory for many years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his students went on to become successful composers and performers in their own right. Despite his success, Lomakin remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to compose and teach until his death in 1919.
