Donald Armstrong, who is also the NZCO's artistic director and principal violinist, founded the ensemble with the aim of creating a chamber orchestra that would showcase the talents of New Zealand's top musicians. The NZCO's first concert was held in Auckland in 1987, and since then the ensemble has gone on to perform throughout New Zealand and internationally. The NZCO's core members include some of New Zealand's most accomplished musicians, including violinists Miranda Adams, Anne Loeser, and Monique Lapins, violist Gillian Ansell, cellist Rolf Gjelsten, and double bassist Joan Perarnau Garriga. These musicians have all had successful careers as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral players, and bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the NZCO. Over the years, the NZCO has performed a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque and Classical music to contemporary works by New Zealand composers. The ensemble has collaborated with many internationally renowned soloists, including pianist Michael Houstoun, cellist Li-Wei Qin, and violinist James Ehnes. One of the NZCO's most notable performances was its 2011 tour of China, where the ensemble performed in some of the country's most prestigious concert halls. The tour was a great success, with the NZCO receiving standing ovations and rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. In addition to its international tours, the NZCO has also performed extensively throughout New Zealand, including regular appearances at the New Zealand International Arts Festival and the Auckland Arts Festival. The ensemble has also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart's complete violin concertos with Donald Armstrong as soloist. The NZCO has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the 2010 Classical Album of the Year award at the New Zealand Music Awards for its recording of works by New Zealand composer John Psathas. In addition to its performances, the NZCO is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and community organizations, and has developed a number of educational programs aimed at introducing young people to classical music.
