In 1986, Douglas won the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, which launched his international career. He was the first non-Russian pianist to win the competition in over twenty years. This victory brought him to the attention of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation. Douglas has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Leonard Slatkin, and Sir Simon Rattle.
