Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticModernGenre:OrchestralThe Orchestre National d'Ile de France (ONDIF) is a classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. Founded in 1974, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent and respected ensembles in France, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The ONDIF was founded by the French government as part of a larger effort to promote classical music in the country. The orchestra's first conductor was Jacques Mercier, who led the ensemble until 1986. Under Mercier's leadership, the ONDIF quickly established itself as a major force in the French classical music scene, performing regularly at prestigious venues such as the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Salle Pleyel. In 1986, the ONDIF appointed Jean-Pierre Jacquillat as its new conductor. Jacquillat continued the orchestra's tradition of excellence, leading the ensemble on numerous international tours and recording several critically acclaimed albums. During his tenure, the ONDIF also began to focus more on contemporary music, commissioning new works from composers such as Luciano Berio and Pierre Boulez. In 1998, the ONDIF appointed Enrique Mazzola as its new music director. Mazzola, a native of Italy, brought a fresh perspective to the orchestra, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and experimentation. Under his leadership, the ONDIF continued to expand its repertoire, performing works by a wide range of composers from Bach to Stravinsky to John Adams. One of the highlights of the ONDIF's history came in 2004, when the orchestra performed at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The ensemble played a specially commissioned piece by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. In addition to its international performances, the ONDIF has also been recognized for its contributions to the French classical music scene. The orchestra has won numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Victoires de la Musique Classique. Today, the ONDIF continues to be a leading force in the classical music world, with a roster of talented musicians and a commitment to innovation and excellence. The orchestra's current music director is Case Scaglione, who took over the position in 2018. With Scaglione at the helm, the ONDIF is poised to continue its legacy of musical excellence for years to come.More....
