Ernst Marzendorfer is a renowned Austrian conductor and composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on July 2, 1936, in Vienna, Austria, Marzendorfer showed an early interest in music and began his musical education at the age of six. He studied piano, violin, and music theory at the Vienna Music Academy and later went on to study conducting with Hans Swarowsky. Marzendorfer began his career as a conductor in 1960 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Vienna Volksoper. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon appointed as the principal conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He held this position from 1964 to 1970 and during this time, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra. In 1970, Marzendorfer was appointed as the principal conductor of the Graz Opera in Austria. He held this position for five years and during this time, he conducted numerous productions including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Verdi's "La Traviata". He also conducted the world premiere of Gottfried von Einem's opera "The Visit of the Old Lady" in 1971. In 1975, Marzendorfer was appointed as the principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for ten years and during this time, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra. He also conducted the orchestra on several international tours including tours to Japan, the United States, and Europe. Marzendorfer has also conducted numerous other orchestras around the world including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also conducted at numerous music festivals including the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. In addition to his work as a conductor, Marzendorfer is also a composer. He has composed numerous works including orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. His compositions have been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world. Marzendorfer has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1978, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. In 1986, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the City of Vienna. In 1996, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria. In 2006, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the Province of Lower Austria. Marzendorfer has also been recognized for his recordings. He has received numerous awards for his recordings including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Edison Award, and the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis.
