Born on December 12, 1960, in Texas, Powell grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. His father was a church choir director, and his mother was a pianist, so music was always a part of his life. Powell attended the University of North Texas, where he studied music and voice. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in opera. He began his professional career in 1985, singing with the New York City Opera in productions of "La BohĆØme" and "The Barber of Seville." Over the years, Powell has performed with some of the most prestigious opera companies in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He has also appeared in numerous productions in the United States, including at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera. One of Powell's most notable performances was in the Metropolitan Opera's production of "La Traviata" in 2006. He played the role of Germont, and his performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. The New York Times called his performance "superb," and Opera News described him as "a baritone of exceptional power and beauty." Powell has also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1998, he won the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an American opera singer who is on the verge of a major international career.
