Amarcord is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1992 in Leipzig, Germany. The group is made up of five male singers who specialize in a cappella music from the Renaissance to the present day. The members of Amarcord are Wolfram Lattke (tenor), Robert Pohlers (tenor), Frank Ozimek (baritone), Daniel Knauft (baritone), and Holger Krause (bass). The name Amarcord is derived from the Italian phrase "a m'arcord" which means "I remember." The group chose this name to reflect their passion for preserving and performing music from different eras and cultures. Amarcord's repertoire includes works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Monteverdi, and Franz Schubert, as well as traditional folk songs from around the world. Amarcord's founding members, Wolfram Lattke and Frank Ozimek, met while studying at the Leipzig Conservatory. They were both members of the St. Thomas Boys Choir, which is famous for its association with Bach and its performances at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Lattke and Ozimek shared a love of a cappella music and decided to form a group that would focus on this genre. They recruited three other singers, Robert Pohlers, Daniel Knauft, and Holger Krause, and Amarcord was born. The group's first performance was in 1992 at the Leipzig Bach Festival, where they received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Bach's motets. Since then, Amarcord has performed at major music festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. They have also collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Amarcord's most notable performances was at the 2006 World Cup opening ceremony in Munich, where they sang the German national anthem in front of a global audience of millions. The group has also been featured on numerous recordings, including their own albums as well as collaborations with other artists. Amarcord has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1994, they won the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. They have also been awarded the Echo Klassik, Germany's most prestigious classical music award, multiple times. In addition to their performances, Amarcord is also committed to music education and outreach. They regularly conduct workshops and masterclasses for young singers and have established their own music academy in Leipzig. Overall, Amarcord has established itself as one of the premier a cappella ensembles in the world. Their dedication to preserving and performing music from different eras and cultures has earned them a loyal following and critical acclaim. With their unique blend of vocal talent and musical expertise, Amarcord continues to inspire audiences around the globe.
