Halfvarson grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional singer and his mother a pianist. He started singing at a young age and was encouraged by his parents to pursue a career in music. Halfvarson attended the University of Southern California, where he studied voice and music theory. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree. During his time at Juilliard, Halfvarson was mentored by renowned bass-baritone Jerome Hines, who helped him develop his vocal technique and stage presence. Halfvarson made his professional debut in 1974, singing the role of Colline in Puccini's La bohème with the San Francisco Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, and went on to perform with some of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. One of Halfvarson's most notable performances was his portrayal of Hagen in Wagner's Götterdämmerung at the Metropolitan Opera in 1990.
