He was the son of the legendary composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, and his wife, Nina Varzar. Maxim grew up in a musical family, and his father's influence played a significant role in shaping his musical career. Maxim started his musical training at an early age, and he showed exceptional talent in playing the piano. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he received his formal education in music. He also received private lessons from his father, who was one of the most prominent composers of the 20th century. In 1958, Maxim made his debut as a pianist, performing his father's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of his career as a musician. He continued to perform as a pianist, and he also started to conduct orchestras. In 1960, Maxim conducted his first concert with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and he received critical acclaim for his performance. Maxim's career as a conductor reached new heights in 1975 when he was appointed the principal conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.
