She attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where she studied under the tutelage of the renowned soprano, Erna Berger. In 1957, Schlemm made her debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she performed the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Over the course of her career, Schlemm performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
