He was born on June 22, 1944, in New York City, United States. Epstein grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a professional drummer. He started playing the drums at a young age and showed a natural talent for percussion. Epstein received his formal education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of Saul Goodman, the principal timpanist of the New York Philharmonic. He graduated from Juilliard in 1965 and immediately began his professional career as a percussionist. Epstein's first major performance was with the New York Philharmonic in 1966, where he played the timpani in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. This performance marked the beginning of Epstein's long and illustrious career as a percussionist. In 1968, Epstein joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the principal timpanist, a position he held for 46 years until his retirement in 2014. During his tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Epstein played a crucial role in shaping the orchestra's sound and reputation. He was known for his impeccable timing, precision, and musicality, and his contributions to the orchestra were widely recognized and appreciated.
