He was born on June 28, 1946, in San Antonio, Texas. His father was a physician, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Rodriguez showed a keen interest in music, and his mother began teaching him piano when he was just four years old. Rodriguez's musical education began in earnest when he was eight years old and began studying piano with Mary Margaret McBride. He continued his studies with her for the next ten years, during which time he also began composing his own music. In 1964, Rodriguez enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied composition with Hunter Johnson and piano with Danielle Martin. After completing his undergraduate degree, Rodriguez went on to earn a master's degree in composition from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with Henri Lazarof. He then returned to the University of Texas at Austin to earn a doctorate in composition, studying with Hunter Johnson once again. Throughout his career, Rodriguez has composed music in a wide variety of genres, including opera, ballet, orchestral works, chamber music, and solo pieces. He has been commissioned by numerous organizations, including the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, and the New York City Ballet. One of Rodriguez's most famous works is his opera "Frida," which premiered in 1991. The opera tells the story of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, the painter Diego Rivera. The opera has been performed all over the world and has been praised for its innovative use of Mexican folk music and its powerful portrayal of Kahlo's life. Another notable work by Rodriguez is his ballet "Carmen," which premiered in 1988. The ballet is based on the famous opera by Georges Bizet and tells the story of the fiery Spanish gypsy Carmen and her doomed love affair with the soldier Don José. Rodriguez's score for the ballet incorporates elements of flamenco music and features a number of virtuosic solos for the dancers. In addition to his larger works, Rodriguez has also composed a number of chamber music pieces, including several for the guitar. He has a particular affinity for the guitar, which he has described as "the most expressive of all instruments." His guitar music often incorporates elements of Latin American folk music and has been performed by some of the world's leading guitarists, including Sharon Isbin and Pepe Romero. Throughout his career, Rodriguez has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1983, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 1997 he was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters. He has also been awarded the Prix de Rome, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Music Award, and the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Today, Rodriguez continues to compose music and is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers of his generation. His music is known for its innovative use of diverse musical styles and its powerful emotional impact. Whether writing for the opera stage, the ballet, or the concert hall, Rodriguez's music is always fresh, exciting, and deeply moving.More....
