Born in Rochester, New York in 1946, Schein began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with some of the most distinguished pianists of the 20th century, including Arthur Rubinstein, Mieczyslaw Munz, and Rudolf Serkin. Schein's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. At the age of 11, she made her debut with the New York Philharmonic, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. She went on to win numerous competitions, including the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Leventritt Competition, which launched her career as a soloist. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Schein performed extensively in the United States and Europe, playing with major orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also made several recordings, including a highly acclaimed set of Chopin's complete works for solo piano. In addition to her solo career, Schein has been a sought-after chamber musician, collaborating with some of the world's leading instrumentalists and vocalists. She has performed with the Guarneri Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, and the cellist Yo-Yo Ma, among others. One of Schein's most memorable performances took place in 1987, when she played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of David Zinman. The performance was hailed by critics as a triumph, with The Washington Post calling Schein's playing "a model of clarity, precision, and expressive depth." Schein has also been recognized for her contributions to music education.
