Serge Collot was a French violist and music educator who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on January 23, 1923, in Paris, France, Collot began his musical journey at a young age. He started playing the violin at the age of six and later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Collot received his formal music education at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Maurice Vieux, a renowned French violist. He graduated from the conservatory with a first prize in viola in 1943. After completing his studies, Collot joined the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, where he played as a violist for several years. In 1953, Collot became a founding member of the Parrenin Quartet, which was named after its leader, the violinist Jean Parrenin. The quartet quickly gained recognition for its exceptional performances and became one of the most sought-after chamber ensembles in France. The Parrenin Quartet performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, collaborating with some of the most prominent musicians of the time. Collot's exceptional musicianship and technical proficiency on the viola earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In 1954, he won the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition, which helped to establish his reputation as a world-class violist. He also received the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with the Parrenin Quartet in 1960. In addition to his work as a performer, Collot was also a dedicated music educator. He taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1959 to 1988, where he trained several generations of young musicians. Many of his students went on to become successful performers and educators in their own right. Collot's contributions to the world of classical music were not limited to his performances and teaching. He was also a prolific composer and arranger, and his works have been performed by numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. Some of his most notable compositions include his Sonata for Viola and Piano and his String Quartet No. 2. Throughout his career, Collot remained committed to promoting the viola as a solo instrument and elevating its status in the world of classical music. He was a passionate advocate for contemporary music and worked closely with several composers to commission new works for the viola. Collot's legacy as a musician and educator continues to inspire generations of musicians around the world. He passed away on January 22, 2008, at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich and enduring musical legacy.
