Francis Colpron is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born in Quebec City, Canada, in 1968, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Colpron showed a keen interest in music and began playing the recorder at the age of six. Colpron's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a sought-after performer. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec, where he received a diploma in recorder performance. He then went on to study at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he received a diploma in early music performance. Colpron's career as a performer began in the early 1990s when he founded the ensemble Les Boréades de Montréal. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances of early music. Colpron's leadership and musicianship were instrumental in the success of the ensemble, and he quickly became recognized as one of the leading performers of early music in Canada. Over the years, Colpron has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including La Petite Bande, Les Arts Florissants, and the Freiburger Barockorchester. He has also performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. One of the highlights of Colpron's career was his performance at the 2000 Montreal International Music Competition. He was awarded first prize in the early music category, which helped to further establish his reputation as a leading performer in the field. Colpron has also been recognized for his work as a conductor. In 2003, he was appointed the artistic director of Les Boréades de Montréal, a position he held until 2018. Under his leadership, the ensemble continued to thrive, and he was instrumental in expanding its repertoire to include works from the Baroque and Classical periods. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Colpron is also a respected music educator. He has taught at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and the Université de Montréal, and he has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. In 2005, he was awarded the Prix Opus for Performer of the Year by the Conseil québécois de la musique. In 2010, he was awarded the Prix Denise-Pelletier, which is the highest honor awarded by the government of Quebec for contributions to the arts and culture. Today, Colpron continues to perform and record with Les Boréades de Montréal and other leading early music ensembles. He remains committed to promoting the music of the Baroque and Classical periods and to inspiring the next generation of musicians.
