Andor Foldes was a Hungarian classical pianist who was born on December 18, 1913, in Budapest, Hungary. He was born into a musical family, and his father was a violinist. Foldes began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent. He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he was taught by some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok. Foldes made his debut as a pianist at the age of 18, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. He won several awards and competitions, including the Franz Liszt Prize in 1937. He also performed in many concerts throughout Europe, and he became known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. In 1940, Foldes moved to the United States, where he continued to perform and teach. He became a professor at the University of Michigan, and he also taught at the Juilliard School in New York City. He continued to perform in concerts throughout the United States and Europe, and he became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. One of Foldes' most notable performances was his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, which he performed with the New York Philharmonic in 1950. The performance was widely praised, and it helped to establish Foldes as one of the leading pianists of his time. Foldes also recorded many albums throughout his career, including recordings of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert.
