The founding members of the Lydian String Quartet were all accomplished musicians with impressive backgrounds. Daniel Stepner had previously been a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was a founding member of the Boston Museum Trio. Judith Eissenberg had performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Boston Musica Viva. Mary Ruth Ray had been a member of the New England Conservatory String Quartet and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Rhonda Rider had performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Boston Musica Viva. The quartet's name, "Lydian," is derived from the ancient Greek mode of music that was associated with joy and celebration. The Lydian String Quartet has performed extensively throughout the United States and around the world, earning critical acclaim for their exceptional musicianship and innovative programming.
